It takes 40 gallons of Sugar Maple sap to make one gallon of Maple syrup. I’m working on a project with a partner on making maple syrup and selling it on SugarMaple.com. She didn’t realize how much you had to cook down. I told her that’s really how everything in the world is. It takes 40 of something to get good one. It’s the same for domains. You sell maybe 4 per hundred each year if you’re portfolio is good. Maybe 7 if its great. Probably going to sell 2.
I had the same conversation with new production workers. They couldn’t believe that it takes 7 years for some plants to get big enough to sell. Time is how you make money. You can buy your way into it by buying bigger starts/seedlings. But all you are doing is trading time for money. The best return is waiting. The key is to continue having crops and income coming in each year. Reinvesting now for the future. It’s easy to take some of the money and use it for other things. But all you are doing is taking away your future income. Of course there is a time to stop reinvesting and start diversifying or just cashing out. That’s a decision that is personal. Every person has different needs. The problem is people think their needs is just more money and the don’t have the patience or the knowhow to set themselves up for high margin profits each year. And people like me that understand it are too busy making it happen to teach someone how and why they can do it too.
