Emile raises $29.4 million and rebrands to Subject.com

Online learning platform gets an A for its rebrand.

Emile Learning acquired Subject.com this year and rebranded to Subject.

Education companies and premium domain names go hand in hand, it seems. Startups such as Chalk, Class, and Clever operate on their exact-match .com domain, and now another education platform is following suit.

Founded in 2020 as Emile, the Los Angeles-based startup began building what it describes as the Netflix of high school education, where students can watch and interact with high-quality accredited courses.

No matter the student’s location or status, Emile’s ambition was to offer education to anyone that wanted it. The company gained traction thanks in part to its high-quality classes and sleek production values.

Emile raised $5.3 million across 2 funding rounds in 2021, but the company has kicked on in 2022. The company recently announced that it raised $29.4 million in Series A funding, with backing from the likes of Kleiner Perkins, which has previously invested in Duolingo and Coursera.

Something more remarkable than Emile’s additional funding is its rebrand. The company has now transitioned from Emile to Subject. This move naturally comes with a domain change.

From its original HiEmile.com, the company has switched to the premium Subject.com domain.

According to Whois history, Subject.com was acquired from Abstract Machine Tool, Inc., an information system development company in Phoenix, Arizona. Whois history suggests that this company may have been the original registrant of Subject.com.

The acquisition looks to have taken place in early January 2022, with plenty of behind-the-scenes planning and development needed to switch the company from HiEmile.com to Subject.com.

For Subject, its website and domain name are vital to its operation. The learning platform Subject has developed is now hosted at Subject.com, with all of the students accessing courses via Subject.com.

The use of Subject.com goes a long way towards allowing potential students to trust the service, its content, and its ability to deliver courses over an extended period of time. That may have been difficult to achieve with its original domain, HiEmile.com.
